My heart.

thelittleyellowdiary:

My heart is literally broken… If there’s anything to know about me, it’s that I adored this man…
Although Oscar de la Renta is the reason I fell in love with fashion at a very young age, he represented so much more to me than beautiful dresses. He represented chasing your dreams and rising from the very bottom to the very top through hard work, dedication and perseverance… He was my every day reminder that dreams do come true no matter where you’re from, your class or race. If he could make it, so could I. He’s from a small island in the Caribbean just like my family, but his vision for his life exceeded the borders of the Dominican Republic. He landed an apprenticeship in Spain to work under the legendary Cristóbal Balenciaga as a teenager… His mother was dying and, of course, he didn’t want to leave her side, but she refused to let him stay, so off to Spain he went, and with a heavy heart because he knew he’d never see his mother again… and the rest is history. He certainly made her proud.
As a Dominican American, he has also made me so unbelievably proud. From our humble island to the White House and beyond… From poor beginnings to building one of the most iconic and sophisticated fashion houses in the world… He was a gem… And one of the finest. And a national treasure to not only the Dominican Republic, but to America…
Farewell to a fashion legend and my fashion icon… I’m so honored to have met you and to have captured that magical moment. I’ll never forget it and the way you looked me up and down with a smile on your face as if you were approving what I was wearing. It was an indescribable feeling. Say ‘hello’ to Coco for me…
